How to use the generator
Choose how much text you need — paragraphs, sentences or a word count — and the text appears instantly. Regenerate produces a different variation; Copy puts it on your clipboard. Tick Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags to get HTML ready to paste into a template.
The history of lorem ipsum
The passage has been used by typesetters since at least the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a page of Cicero to make a type specimen book. It survived into the 1960s on Letraset dry-transfer sheets, and into the desktop-publishing era through Aldus PageMaker in the 1980s, which shipped it as sample text. Today it’s the default placeholder in nearly every design tool.
The original Cicero passage, section 1.10.32, reads: “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” — “Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself, because it is pain…” The standard lorem ipsum text is a garbled version with words cut, added and reordered.
When to use placeholder text — and when not to
Use it for early wireframes and layout comps where the copy doesn’t exist yet and you want feedback on structure, spacing and hierarchy.
Don’t use it once real content is available, or for anything close to final. Real copy is almost always longer, shorter or shaped differently than the placeholder, and designs that only work with lorem ipsum break when actual headlines arrive. Many designers now prefer “realistic placeholder” — actual draft copy, even if rough — as early as possible.
And obviously: check before shipping. Lorem ipsum in a live product is a classic embarrassment; the word counter won’t catch it, but a search for “lorem” will.
Typical amounts
| Element | Placeholder amount |
|---|---|
| Headline | 3–8 words |
| Subheading | 10–20 words |
| Card / teaser | 1–2 sentences |
| Body paragraph | 40–90 words |
| Blog post mock-up | 5–8 paragraphs |
| Product description | 2–3 paragraphs |
Alternatives
If lorem ipsum feels stale, the same job can be done with any nonsense corpus — there are generators built on everything from bacon to Samuel L. Jackson quotes. For multilingual layouts, use placeholder text in the target language’s alphabet so character widths and line breaks are realistic; Latin words are a poor stand-in for Japanese or Arabic.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing coherent. It's scrambled Latin derived from a passage of Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC) — "dolorem ipsum" means "pain itself" — altered until it reads as plausible text without meaning.
Why use nonsense text instead of real words?
So that people reviewing a layout look at the design, not the copy. Readable text distracts reviewers into editing it; lorem ipsum has a natural distribution of word lengths without being readable.
How many words are in a paragraph?
This generator produces paragraphs of 4–7 sentences, roughly 40–90 words, which matches typical body copy. Use the "words" unit when you need an exact count.
Can I generate the classic opening sentence every time?
Yes — keep "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" ticked. Untick it for fully random text.
