Quick mental tipping
- 10%: move the decimal one place left. $64.50 → $6.45.
- 20%: double the 10% figure. $12.90.
- 15%: 10% plus half of 10%. $6.45 + $3.23 ≈ $9.70.
- 18%: 20% minus 10% of that. $12.90 − $1.29 ≈ $11.60.

A $64.50 dinner for two, tipping 18%:
- Tip: $11.61
- Total: $76.11
- Each person pays: $38.06
Rounding up makes the total $77.00, a tip of $12.50 (19.4%).
When a service charge is already added
Check the bill for “service charge”, “gratuity” or “auto-grat” before adding a tip. If 18–20% is already included, you don’t need to add more, though some diners add a few dollars for outstanding service. Large-party gratuities are usually noted on the menu.
